Winter Remembers

The winter sky mimics the summer juices of strawberries and peaches
Poured across the blue plate of the horizon.  "Ah, Summer," it seems to cry,
"My dear warm friend," then breathes with an icy sigh "I pay homage
To your faded flora's once rich colors, until you come back again."

Bigotry

They drink the poison from their own skin,

Licking the toxic, hallucinogenic toad.
They never go beyond the surface;

Marrow is our equalizer.  In their own mouths
The epithelial cells tell true tales.  They are not listening

To the DNA speak true history.  Frenzied and foaming
At the mouth with hate they eat their own flesh.

Voice Notes

Speak notes into the air
I am listening with new ears
Music lifting
Weight floating away
I am hearing with eyes of the soul
And it is your voice

Before Blues Came

Dancing Rabbit, dips one paw
Into clear creek waters. Pink nose wiggle,
A shake of the head to ready thoughts;
Leap into unknown histories of a people
Who knew these lands long before blue eyes.

Old-Fashioned Comfort

We loved your ample bosoms,
Dear Grandmothers,
So soft and pillow-like;
The perfect place to lay sleepy heads.

We loved your voluminous laps,
Dear Grannies,
Wrapped in yards of cotton;
The perfect place to rest teary faces.

We loved your full long dresses,
Dear mothers of our parents,
In lengths well past your knees;
The perfect place to hide a shy child.

Holding Faith

You’ve been jumping off the edge
Without a hand to hold.

Love, it seems, can be
As rare as angel’s bones.

Yet, the thorn cuts the finger
Of the very hand that cuts the bloom;

Sometime there is pain in beauty.
